Rochester Trip

I am just home from a week in Rochester. Mary and Mary Kay were in town from Paris so it seemed like a good time to visit. Yes, yes, ANYTIME is a good time to visit Roch cha cha, but I got bang for my buck with them there, too. We held a big party on Wed. night. Mom's buddies (Barb, Dee, Cathy G, Sally & Don, Betty) were all in attendance. And the Beikirchs, Bob, Eileen, Kathy, Mary Pat. And the dutiful "daughter" who still lives in Fairport, Liz / Betty Bannister. We picked up a bunch of food prepared at Wegmans, poured a few drinks, and let the good times roll. We also put in a bit of time at the local pool... , excuse em moi.... aquatic center. Did a few things on mom's chore list. Watched a couple movies... "door to door" is highly recommended. Saw a bit of the debate.. zz zzz... Then I went in to town, and hung out with my old high school and college buddies (Anne Z, Kathy, Pele , Tiger, Jan, Mary Ellen) . Went to Mass (their church celebrated 10 yr. anniv, Kathy is music director) dinner, and then to a cafe where Kathy's brother was "headlining" and she popped on stage to join in on a few numbers. All great fun. OK, on to the photos.

Avast ! ye heathens

Aye ! Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Kristoffer at the Bunghole aye, bunghole is a pirate word

"Arrrrgggghhhhh" speak up, me matey

a pirate's ride

Oops, Tara didn't get the word... it is NOT "International Look Like a Fish" day

Nugatory

That's my word of the day.... and it so aptly describes this blog.

nugatory :
"trifling, of no value," 1603, from L. nugatorius "worthless, futile," from nugator (gen. nugatoris) "jester, trifler," from nugatus, pp. of nugari "to trifle," from nugæ (gen. nugarum) "jokes, jests, trifles," of unknown origin.
Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2001 Douglas Harper

and i learned it from reading the blogs... all palin all the time...this obsession must end soon. quite depressing..

So, what kind of trifling news do I have to report?? hmm.... the knee ? since July, it's been a bit of a roller coaster... good one day, bad for a few. But mostly good now. Now that I know NOT to try and run on it. So I've been walking around the lake with a few 1 minute jogs. It feels fine when running, but gets sore afterwards, especially if I go for a REALLY LONG RUN of 4 minutes. sheesh..... a marathon could take forever at my current pace.

But it's still been nice enough to swim in the lake, altho that seems to be more of a leisurely swimming activity. I should get to the pool for some serious workout laps. I wonder how things are over at our secret pool?

And of course, the spin classes continue to keep me aerobically in shape. Thanks to our fav. spinmeisters, Cheryl and Darcy.

And Rachel Maddow is a huge hit with her new show on MSNBC.. check it out.

Kudos all around AGAIN (Val)

Triathlon season has come to an end. Well, there are more races but our little group might be done. Gina, Pam and Val all headed to Federal Way for the Suburu All Women's sprint tri this past weekend. Such and exotic location. Gina was glad to have Val there to show them the ropes.

Results ! I know that's what you want to hear about. SO, drum roll please (ABB)...............................

Val won our age group AGAIN - AS USUAL - TO BE EXPECTED - whatever

But the results sheet shows that she really had to work for it. Our buddy Karen B. gave her a good run for the money, placing second by mere seconds. 4 to be exact. Not bad for a couple of old gals who really didn't put in a ton of training this summer. Both Val and Karen were in the Top 10 overall, too.

Gina put in a top 10 performance, and who cares how many were in the age group. TOP TEN, BABY !! she did say that the course is hard... esp. the transition from swim to bike where she had to run barefoot across a parking lot for a mile. ouch ouch... I exaggerate the distance, but as I'm a tenderfoot, too, I'm sure the pain was real.

Newbie Tri-er Pam B. was in the top 50 percentile of her age group (of which she's in her last year, being 49.... look out next year all you smug 50 year olds) She placed 19th, and when that swim stroke gets as smooth as her jump shot I think she will be podium material.

Our other racing buddy, Judy Fisher, in the 65 year old age group, took 1st. AS USUAL.

Rehearsal

A team cannot win a gold medal without lots of practice and training. In this video you can see a little of what kind of effort goes into the making of our gold medal performance.
